The Orchestra is run by an elected committee of members in collaboration with the Principal Conductor. Elections are held at the annual general meeting. The committee for 2017-2018 is:

Paul Evans, Somerset County Orchestra 1Chairman – Paul Evans

Paul is the orchestra’s current chairman. A member of the orchestra for over 25 years this is his second stint in the chair. Like so many of the members Paul’s commitment to the orchestra is impressive especially as he now drives to rehearsals and concerts from Lyme Regis. No mean feat – and he has to lug that great big instrument of his around!

Susan Kaufman, Somerset County Orchestra 1Secretary – Susan Kaufman

Susan is the orchestra’s secretary. The toughest job on any committee and boy does she do it well and efficiently. She is an absolute gem and greatly under recognised. And of course an exceptional cellist.

Treasurer – David Coglan

David joined the orchestra in 2008 when he moved down to Somerset. He has been playing the cello since he was seven having been inspired at a recital by Ralph Kirshbaum in Manchester. He has also played with the Cornwall Youth Orchestra and the University of London Orchestra.

Joanna Coull Somerset County OrchestraPublicity – Joanna Coull

Joanna is the newcomer on the block having only joined the orchestra in November 2014. She has played in amateur orchestras in Warwickshire over the last 30 years and always seems to end up on the committee! She is the publicity officer who is tasked with spreading the word all over Somerset about all things to do with Somerset County Orchestra.

Patrons – Sue Turner

Sue is the orchestra’s principal oboe and has been playing with the SCO for over 10 years. As Patrons Secretary Sue’s job is to look after the current patrons and encourage audience members to join the scheme in support of the orchestra. Sue also helps Joanna with publicity when needed.

Clare Kippen, Somerset County OrchestraFront of House – Clare Kippen

Clare is front of house. A second violinist, Clare has been a member of the orchestra since 1980. Over 30 years! As the hospitality member of the committee she has the incredibly important job of organising and running the bar during concerts.

Mike Hollis, Somerset County OrchestraGeneral – Mike Hollis

Mike is commercial secretary which means he has the challenging job of finding businesses to support us by making a regular subscription in return for advertising in our programmes. Mike’s claim to fame is that he played in the opening of Festival Hall in 1951 at the tender age of 14! He had been a member of the orchestra since 2000.
